Experience by doing; part 3

The art of managing expectations

We have been updating you on our project manager’s private project. Gijs van Beek is building a houseboat from scratch.

Where is the project currently? Gijs: “The casco was completed in February. In October, we’ll move forward. For the time being, the build is on pause, affording me the opportunity to work on the details of the next steps.”

What have you learned from this experience? “In my MasterShip projects, my work is primarily centered around digital designs. It’s largely theoretical. Working on my houseboat has provided me with hands-on experience. It’s improved my skills in communicating with builders and scheduling construction phases. Additionally, it has taught me the art of managing my own expectations.”

Your own expectations? “Yes. For various reasons, digital designs do not always translate flawlessly into reality. I’ve learned that sometimes it’s more beneficial to set my perfectionism aside and focus on seeking the most practical solutions. You can say I have discovered the delicate art of keeping a build moving.”

“Another insight is that there is a wealth of knowledge within our industry, and many of these individuals are more than willing to help. When I faced specific challenges with my private project, I often fell into a pattern of hyper-focusing on finding the best solutions on my own. I’ve since realized that seeking advice could have saved me a great deal of time.”
